it is usually confined to the middle Arctic tundra zone
Plant Classification: Hardy perennial
Packet Content(approx.): 10
A challenge to grow, this lovely dwarf with bright yellow flowers and a prostrate rosette of hairy, grey-green, divided leaves is very seldom seen in cultivation. A very rare plant, it spends its long winter under snow. It is a member of the very complicated group, section Nivea and when encountered in the northern hemisphere, it is usually confined to the middle Arctic tundra zone where it is often found on dry, gravelly soil of exposed ridges and slopes in the montane to alpine zones. It is often confined to cliff ledges, rocky outcrops, and scree in slopes with high isolation rates. In Norway it is restricted to Svalbard, the inner and middle parts of the fjords of Spitsbergen from Van Mijenfjorden north to Wijdefjorden, Liefdefjorden, and Krossfjorden. Few seeds collected.
Sowing advice:
Seeds can be sown at any time but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in the wet compost to break their dormancy. We advise covering seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the depth of the seed size. If the seeds do not come up within 6 to 12 weeks the damp seed tray can be given cold treatment in a fridge for about four weeks. They may still take very many months to appear, so please never discard the pot or tray.
