The famous and choice ‘Calamondin’ orange has beautiful cream and green variegated foliage, with normal yellow fruits, making it a very desirable ornamental fruiting plant which is very easy to grow. Extremely fragrant white or purplish flowers appear spring to summer and a heavy set of fruit follows, which ripens well on the plant adding to its decorative show. Furthermore, the masses of small, juicy, slightly tart oranges with a spongy or leathery rind, have a juicy pulp that is divided into sections and is often used in marmalades, for preserves or cooking. The plant is a cross between a kumquat and an orange and is characterized by wing-like appendages on the leaf stalks. Seeds come true to type.

Sowing advice:
These seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned and cold-stored for several months. They should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, and covered thinly with sand or grit and kept moist. Keep at between 15 and 20 degrees C. Germination usually occurs within 4 to 6 weeks although some seeds may take much longer. Pot on and grow in a warm garden, or a bright place indoors, when fruiting should be prolific within 2 years or so.

Uses:
The fruits are sour and are often used for preserves or cooking. The calamansi bears a small citrus fruit that is used to flavor foods and drinks. Despite its outer appearance and its aroma, the taste of the fruit itself is quite sour, although the peel is sweet. Calamansi marmalade can be made in the same way as orange marmalade. Like other citrus fruits, the calamansi is high in vitamin C.
The fruit can be frozen whole and used as ice cubes in beverages such as tea, soft drinks, water, and
