A valuable and easy plant that thrives in poor dry soil

Family: Lamiaceae
Common name: STICKY JERUSALEM SAGE, TURKISH SAGE
Plant Classification: Hardy perennial
Maximum Height: 90 cm

Although it looks tender, this Syrian plant is actually bone-hardy, stout stems bearing tiered whorls of hooded, butter yellow flowers in summer, above rough heart-shaped basal leaves. A valuable and easy plant that thrives in poor dry soil.

Sowing advice:
For best results, sow seeds immediately onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. They can be sown at any time, and germination can sometimes be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. However, we sow most seeds in an unheated greenhouse and wait for natural germination as many seeds have built-in dormancy mechanisms, and often wait for spring before emerging regardless of when they are sown. But spring sowing will obviously give them a full season of growth if successful germination occurs.

Culture
Easily grown in organically rich, fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade. Prefers sandy soils with excellent drainage. Plants tolerate dry soil conditions in cool summer climates, but generally appreciate some regular moisture in hot summer climates. Avoid wet soils. Plants spread quickly by rhizomes, without being invasive, to form a weed-suppressing ground cover.
