Primrose Pinkie

Code:514
Seedlings may vary slightly but all will be lovely

Family: Primulaceae
Plant Classification: Hardy perennial
Maximum Height: 12 cm

In our gardens at Plant World we grow the lovely old-fashioned primrose ‘Garryarde Guinevere’ which carries bright pink flowers above deep purple leaves. Our busy bees carried pollen from these old plants, which are themselves sterile and produce no seed, to a bed of our yellow ‘Devon primrose’ or Primula vulgaris. One of the subsequent seedlings was a lovely hybrid between the two, bearing large, floppy, pale pink flowers, on darker stems, over a rosette of palest purple leaves. Seedlings may vary slightly but all will be lovely.

Sowing advice:
Primula seeds may be sown at any time onto a loam-based compost, barely cover so that around 50% are still visible. Best germination temperatures are between 10 and 15 degrees C. (e.g. a cool, northerly window sill) PLEASE NOTE: Temperatures exceeding 15 C can prevent germination, and above 20 C expect very little germination as most seeds will go dormant as a protective measure. Germination takes between 3 to 6 weeks, sometimes taking much longer.

Tip:
It is a super easy to grow wildflower, and naturally I had to include it in my inventory. However, be careful when growing these as they can be very aggressive and invasive, and may be better suited for a container, and dead headed often, before its seeds form, if you don’t wish for them to spread everywhere.
