From dry open places in South America comes this truly delightful flower with pendulous carmine-red bonnets dangling from its dividing stems which are clad in hairy leaves. But take care! The whole family of plants has irritating stinging hairs, even on the flowers, which are used to deter grazing animals. Best grown in a sheltered spot or an alpine house, and as long as you don’t use it as a cut flower it is a little beauty.
Sowing advice:
For best results, sow seeds in good light at any time onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. We recommend germinating at 15 to 20 degrees C. Seeds should ideally germinate in between 2 and 6 weeks although they make take considerably longer. Pot on seedlings before finally planting out into a container or a well-drained spot
