A truly delightful
Family: Campanulaceae
Plant Classification: Hardy perennial
Minimum Height: 10 cm
Maximum Height: 15 cm
A truly delightful rare campanula relative bearing unusually attractive spiky blue flowers on short stems which hold bright-green, heart-shaped leaves.
Sowing advice:
Sow finely and evenly in a cold frame, cool greenhouse or cool propagator at any time. Cover thinly with compost. Grow on individual seedlings in 3″ pots. Plant out in well-drained position.
Characteristics:
The rampion is native to the mountains of Europe and is also commonly called Oxford rampion and horned rampion.
It grows easily from seed and forms a nice compact clump. I have it growing in both full sun and part shade and it seems to like both conditions. It will be shorter if given lighter and less water.
The plant is rated to zone 5, but it has overwintered in a raised trough during 2013 and 2014 – two very cold winters for zone 5. I would expect it to survive zone 4.
