It is one of the only candelabra primulas
Family: Primulaceae
Plant Classification: Hardy perennial
Minimum Height: 38 cm
Maximum Height: 50 cm
This selection of the vigorous Primula japonica opens layered whorls of red-eyed, bright pink flowers in late spring and early summer, all above strong leafy rosettes of toothed leaves. It is one of the only candelabra primulas that will not only survive, but indeed thrive, in the average garden situation, as long as it it does not completely dry out. And if it does they invariably recover when they are finally watered again.
Sowing advice:
Primula seeds may be sown at any time onto a loam-based compost, barely cover so that around 50% are still visible. Best germination temperatures are between 10 and 15 degrees C. (e.g. a cool, northerly window sill) PLEASE NOTE: Temperatures exceeding 15 C can prevent germination, and above 20 C expect very little germination as most seeds will go dormant as a protective measure. Germination takes between 3 to 6 weeks, sometimes taking much longer.
Growing guide:
Bright reddish pink buds unfurl into whorls of soft pink blossoms in candelabra-like fashion atop tall slender stalks. Each lovely bloom is accented with a bright red eye.
The genus Primula includes some of the most endearing flowers of spring and has been a favorite of gardeners for as long as records have been kept. Most prefer peaty soils, lots of moisture, and partial to full shade, and they combine colors and forms in ways that will win your heart. Our plants are held in cold storage to discourage early bloom, but we are not always successful. These early breaks do not effect future performance in your garden and are not cause for alarm.
